Michelle: Regarding chapter 7 bankruptcy, what are the average prices for the attorney's fees? I had someone quote me around $1,700.

Attorney Paul Urich: How much?

Michelle: $1,700.

Attorney Paul Urich: Pretty much they're running between $1,300 to $2,500. It depends on who you ask. I've been at $1,300 for years now.

Attorney Tom Olsen: Whatever fee you charge, does the bankruptcy trustee or court have to approve that fee?

Attorney Paul Urich: Well, in chapter 13, if it's excessive, the judge may have a hearing on it. In chapter 7, it can be almost anything.

Attorney Tom Olsen: Do I recall that in chapter 7 bankruptcy, that you have to be paid upfront your bankruptcy fee because otherwise, you're just another creditor?

Attorney Paul Urich: Correct.

Attorney Tom Olsen: Okay. Michelle, Paul is saying that he's charging $1,300 for chapter 7 bankruptcy, but whatever bankruptcy attorney you go see, you're going to have to pay him or her in full before they start that process.
